iPAD PAYG French SIM Cards

iPad French PAYG SIM

As you probably know I have an iPAD and needed a French PAYG SIM card for a recent trip to France.

Well firstly Sorry for being away the past few days, I should have let people know I was not going to be posting for a few days.  secondly, on to the quick tidbit of help!!

I searched high and low for solid advice about how I can use my iPAD when i’m abroad.  Apple and the networks are a bit like drug dealers in a way, getting you all hooked on the 3G and email on the move and then taking it away just because you want to leave the UK for a few days!! The best roaming deal I heard about was Vodafone’s 50mb deal but 3 staff at my local store here in Liverpool knew nothing about it and sent me on my way! 50mb is just not enough anyway, its ridiculous to be honest, as is paying between £3 and £7 per mb through the UK networks whilst roaming which is something I will not pay on principle.

Anyway you can get a Micro SIM for an iPAD whilst in France and this is totally practical, sound advice from my own experience.

Firstly don’t waste your time with Phone shop (they didn’t even know what a Micro SIM was!) and Orange MobiCarte were very unhelpful asking me for a French bank account before they would go ahead. Go straight to an SFR shop and ask for the “SFR 3G Pret a Surfer” product.  It’s €9 for the card which gives you your number and 3 days of unlimited surfing.  All you do is find an SFR shop, ask for the product which is also in their shop magazine and pay for it with cash!!  You do need photo ID but a driving license was all that I needed.

They set it up and all you do is put the microsim in the iPAD and it almost works.  The catch is that you need to put the APN details in yourself or you can connect to itunes and let it do it for you.  I was lucky enough to find a free WiFi in Macdonalds over the road and I had my laptop with me for this very purpose.  Hey presto, it detects the SIM and does it all for you!!

To extend the service you could just buy another card, but you can also buy a €6 card which gives you unlimited surfing for 24 hours.  This way is very convenient as you can buy these months in advance from any Cafe Tabac or online from www.sfr.fr/ipad and all you need to do is activate them when you want them.

If you don’t speak french then you ring the 0811 number on the card, you put in the the card/coupon code and press 2 to confirm, you then put in your 06 SIM number and press 2 to confirm and then press 3 to confirm.  In about 30 seconds the ipad worked!  The chap at the Tabac was kind enough to do this for me and showed me how so I could recharge when I needed to.

The SFR sim itself was pretty good. It always seemed to get an edge signal and in main cities 3G was usually present. We used the iPad on tar ins and in the car, browsing, emailing and using google maps in an unrestrictive manner and it never stopped working.

So hopefully that helps, let me know if you need any more help.

Rugged PDA’s What you really want to know

7 09 2010

So we’re launching Rugged and Mobile TV soon and as part of this we’re researching into the field as to what is already out there and its just plain awful and inspired me to blog or rather have a rant!

I challenge you to search for Rugged PDA in Youtube and watch more than 5 minutes of regurgutated manufacturer blurb about how this PDA is “The complete Mobile Solution” and that one has “All day shift batteries.”  The ones with lovely lift music are especially annoying!  Tried it….I rest my case!

Well here’s the truth of tha matter…”all Rugged PDA’s are the same!”  It’s ok to say it, just like all cars are the same, all food mixers and TV’s are too.  OK so they’re not strictly the same but who cares if it’s running a 600MHz Samsung Processor or a 624MHz XScale?  Who cares if it’s got a VGA screen and seriously the amount of GPS chips on the market today is bewildering to me and I run a GPS business!!!  Does it track satellites or not is what we need to tell people and the fact that the iPhone typically has one of the poorest chips on the market but is probably used more than any other PDA speaks volumes about what I am trying to say.

You need to know how the nuiances of a device affect you and your solutions.  You don’t need the blurb which is just aimed at a vain uneducated attempt at building SEO and nothing to do with enriching your knowledge as the customer.

So i’m aiming on putting this right with tv.ruggedandmobile.com where i’ll be looking at all sorts of hardware our market in general and giving you honest opinion about them as well as inside tips on everything we get hold of including customer feedback and on demand blogs/videos based on what you would like to hear about or see.

Watch this space (sorry for the internal advertisment here!) and i’ll let you know when things are up!

Barcode Scanning Help and Tips

7 09 2010
Barcode Scanner Tips

Barcode Scanner Tips

We get a lot of people who get their barcode scanners or rugged PDA’s with scanners built in and find that they can’t scan the Barcodes they want to.  We spend a lot of time dishing out the same barcode scanner tips so this is a quick guide to help you hit the ground running with your barcode scanning!

1. Barcode label advice

Firstly we get so many people who don’t or won’t tell us or show us what they’re scanning.  There are a lot of barcode labels out their that do not confirm, are printed worngly or on a difficult lable type (Shiny, metallic) or are just plain and simply very hard to scan.  The mor ey ou tell us about the lables you are scanning, the more we can advise you so let us know what you are attempting to scan as it can dramatically reduce the types of barcode scanner you can use effectively.

2. Read the manual!

As Jerry Macguire once said…”Help me to help you!”

Now don’t get me wrong, and we love to help here, but we can only help those who help themsleves.  Read the manual, its not hard to find on our website or the manufacturers and learn to use what you have bought before saying it doesn’t work!!

3. Configure your Barcode Scanner

Rugged PDA’s typically have software or an API built in and barcode scanners can use a scan booklet or config tool to set them up properly.  If you’re scanning only 1 type of barcode then switch the rest off.  It will not only make your scanning quicker but it will reduce mis-reads and scanning the wrong barcode too.  If you can’t scan that awkward Code39 or Databar barcode then it might be that the scanner comes with them switched off out of the box.  Again the config tools are as easy and complex as you want theme to be enabling the scanners to be used in many different scenario’s.  Use them!!!

4.  Experiment with Scanning Techniques

Shop barcodes have had years of development put in to them to make them quick and fast to scan at the till, if you’re scanning these you’ll never have an issue.  However there are 50 or so other barcode types and you do need to play with your scanner to find a technique that works.

Experiment with the following:

  • The distance you scan from.  Not all barcodes are read from the same distant and the smaller the barcode, the less flexible the read distance will be.
  • The angle you scan from.  This can also help with lighting being emitted from the scanner which is reflecting off metallic or shiny labels.
  • The surrounding light or environment you scan in which can alter essential contrast in the barcode.

5.  Tried 2D Barcodes?

If you have the power to alter your barcodes then why not try 2D ones?  They’re more riobust, hold far more data and can be read from different media far more easily like LCD screens.  Just a thought!

Looking for better advice on the Spirit M3+?

3 09 2010

Buying a Spirit M3+ Rugged PDA, well it’s really an M3 Mobile M3, formerly known as Mobile Compia M3.

We hate confusing the customer here and the Spirit M3+ is actually a re-badged M3 Mobile M3, Slim Rugged PDA.

We’ve had a lot of chatter about this confusing device recently so I decided to blog about it and settle the score!  Rugged and Mobile sell through expertise and we don’t re-badge any of our products so you know you’re getting a good deal all the time.  We like to be honest and transparent and to give our customers the right information and education.

M3 Mobile, used to be known as Mobile Compia, and we have recently added them to our portfolio of Rugged PDA’s.  The pricing starts low at around £500 and the device is highly configurable and we h ave some great support options for the device now making it a contender in certain scenarios.

Read more on our intro article last week M3 Mobile Added to Portfolio.

Always be transparent and buy from the experts!

The importance of Rugged PDA Evaluations

3 09 2010

Rugged PDA Evaluations

Rugged PDA Evaluations - Helping stop the confused customer

The Rugged PDA market is becoming more and more complex every day and a rugged PDA is no longer a choice of 2 or 3 devices.  Semi rugged PDA’s, Slim rugged PDA’s, small rugged PDA’s, cheap rugged PDA’s,

As mobile data capture becomes more important to businesses we’re seeinga growing number of device come on to the market, plugging all the gaps but all Rugged PDA’s come with their own little quirks, form factors and options which means more confused customers!

Well I don’t like confused customers and this is where the evaluation comes in.  OK, now we can’t send everyone buying 1 device an evaluation and please don’t expect us to loan you a demo for 2 months to get your software sorted with no intention of buying mas we’ll spot you a mile off!  but genuine businesses with a genuine need can expect to see a range of devices from us that they can use in their own environment with their own users in their own time.

We also encourage you to get your users involved early and to feedback to us as much as you can because we’ll be working on finding the device thats right for your solution.

This way everyone is happy and your end soulution works first time.

Come talk to me if you want to know more
